Abstract     In many types of anaemias the mechanical properties of blood cell membranes are altered. Membranes can become fragile, resulting in damage of blood cells. This work shows our research on mechanical properties of membranes. The influence of mechanical properties of cell membrane on the shape changes of red blood cells deformed in shear flow was studied. We also studied the mechanical properties of neutrophil membrane. Aspiration of neutrophil into a micropipette has been theoretically treated, and stable shapes are calculated. As a simplified model of cell membranes, membranes of phospholipid vesicles have been studied, where the mechanical properties of phospholipid membrane have been considered. The effects of externally applied forces on phospholipid vesicles were theoretically analyzed for several typical cases where the dependence of phospholipid vesicle shape on the external forces was determined. Forces, resulting from intracellular polymer structures or the external electric field were also studied. From the measured dependencies of deformation on the applied force, the values of membrane bending constants were determined. Mechanical properties of the membrane can also be determined from the measurement of thermal fluctuations of vesicles.
