Abstract | Autonomic nerve fibre functions were neurophysiologically evaluated in 33 asymptomatic neurologically free type 1 diabetic children and 69 age-matched healthy controls. The evaluation of autonomic nerve fibre functions was performed by sympathetic skin response and R-R interval variation assessment. The majority of abnormal recordings was found on the lower limbs. The dysfunction of the sympathetic nerve fibre type in the lower limbs was altered in 45 %. The sympathetic functions in our diabetic children group were affected more frequently than the parasympathetic functions. The leading abnormal measure was a delayed sympathetic skin response on the foot (42 % of diabetic children). R-R interval variation during deep respiration was abnormal in 24 % of children. R-R interval variation during normal respiration was minimal, and no abnormal result was found. | |
