Abstract     Landfiling continues to be most common from of waste disposal, especially in CEE countries, where landfill leacate could seriously contaminate ground water acquifers that serve as drinking water sources. To prevent landfill leachate practice usually involves waste containment by sealing a landfill site with low permeability materials, which react as a "raincoat" barrier and stimulate waste mummification. Conatural approach, on the other hand, allows a landfill site to become a bioreactor by permitting controlled infiltration. Fast growing trees with high evapotranspiration are used. Leachate is purified with the use of constructed wetland (CW) and then recycled through underground irrigation system to trees. This results in quick stabilization of a landfill site as water in a bioreactor stimulates anaerobic microbes to mineralize organic waste. In this manner hydrological and pollution cycle is closed and landfill site is sustainably rehabiliated.
