Abstract     Through use of modern information technology information access and ways of purchasing, selling and distrinuting infromation have greatly changed. The speed of technological development has forced librarians to learn about large numbers of information resources, specialised subject areas and technology for acquiring, organising and disseminating information. The information they provide for their clients must be accurate, up-to-date and it must be provided cost-effectively. In this article current issues concerning access to electronic information sources and their advantages and disadvantages over printed information sources are briefly outlined. Some criteria for decision-making about purchasing of lectronic information, especially in special libraries in research and development oriented orhanisations, are listed together with some problems encountered by librarians when using electronic information and trends in the electronic information access.
