Abstract     Culture shock syndrome is a form of adjustment disorders to new situations that results from a change of cultural evironment, experienced by a traveller visiting a far away, exotic country. The typycal clinical picture of the culture shock syndrome involves four distinct phases, namely, the phase of enthusiasm, the phase of loneliness and home sickness, the phase of adaptation and remotivation, and finally, the phase of realism. Particular phases are characterized by particular behavioural and emotional disturbances, until finally, in the phase of realism, the traveller reaches a new state of psychological equilibrium. However, the change of cultural environment represents a stress to the traveller which evokes very different responses in different travellers and that is why, in practice, culture shock syndrome very seldom fits into the frame of the classical clinical picture. Since the culture shock syndrome is the most common psychological disorder in travellers, the doctor that gives advice to the traveller must know which are the simple, though unreliable measures that can help the traveller to adjust to the new environment more easily.
Značilna slika sindroma kulturnega šoka obsega štiri obdobja in sicer obdobje entuziazma, obdobje osamljenosti in domotožja, obdobje prilagoditve in remotivacije in na koncu obdobje realizma.
