Abstract     Although most patients with epilepsy have normal lives with few or no cognition or psychiatric alterations, higher rates of psychic pathology are observed in group of patients with epilepsy relative to the general population. The psychiatric disorders most commonly found are depression, psychosis, personality changes and cognitive deficits. Psychiatric simptoms may develop in relationship to the seizures in prodromal or ictal periods, but more commonly are present in a chronic interictal condition. Psychiatric disturbances can be related either to involvement of brain struc- tured or to the chronic characteristics of epilepsy and psychosocial pathogenesis.
