Abstract     Background. We present some problems concerning the estimation of working and driving ability in persons with epilepsy. It is in connection with the health risk due to epilepsy with its manifold symptoms and consequences. Conclusions. The rate of unernployment is higher in people with epilepsy than in general population. Early retirement is more frequent, too. In this aspect organic aetiology of epilepsy is - with regard to prognosis- very unfavourable. A specialist of occupational medicine estimates a patient's temporary working inability - taking into account the epileptologist's findings and conditians of the working place. Some working places are not appropriate for people with epilepsy, so that they have to be transferred to another - safer - working places. The board of examiners' council is entitled to state a patient's permanent working inability. There are far less traffic accidents due to epilepsy (about a quarter percent) than due to drunkenness at the wheel. Complex partial seizures without aura as well as generalised tonic-clonic seizures represent the highest risk for traffic accident. A longer seizure freedom indicates lesser risk of their reappearance and of causing traffic accident. Slovenian traffic legislation still claims - for the group one of drivers - two year's seizure free period without antiepileptic medication - as a prerequisite for permitting to drive. The future new regulations should tolerate the medication. For the drivers group two the ban on driving will generally remain in force.
