Abstract     Background. Diseases and injuries of the spinal cord cause, at the level and below the level of lesion, disturbances of movement and sensation of the body as well as disturbances of vegetative functions and those related to the control of micturition, defecation and sexuality. Lesions of the cervical spinal cord result in the weakness and paralysis of all limbs, while lower lesions affect the trunk and/or lower limb muscles. Chronic transverse lesions of the spinal cord affect the peripheral nervous system at the level of the lesion, while the involvement of the long pathways above the lumbosacral segments cause spastic paralysis. Partial transverse lesions cause several syndromes whose clinical picture depends on the extent and site of the lesion: anterior and anterolateral syndrome, centrai cords syndrome, posterior columns syndrome and hemisection of the left or dght side of the spinal cord. Extramedullar processes affect the spinal cord by invasive growth or constant pressure (spinal cord compressionj. Conclusions. Outcomes of the spinal cord lesions depend mostly on the nature of the lesion, its extent and level, prompt and adequate diagnostics and treatment, associated diseases, compli cations, and age of the patients. Early rehabilitation prevents secondary effects and compiications: respiratory and urinary infections, urinary stones, pressure sores, spasticity, contractures, pain, phlebothrombosis and pulmonary embolism. The main goal of complex rehabilitation, including medical and psychosocial programmes, vocational rehabilitation, rehabilitation aids and technical appliances for environmental control, is to enable a successful and timely return of the disabled persons to return to the society.
