Abstract		A survey study concerning violence was conducted among staff with elderly in residential settings and ordinary homes as well as people with mental retardation. In Sweden very few studies have been conducted on violence directed towards staff caring for the elderly in residential settings and in ordinary housing (home care) as well as towards staff caring for people with mental retardation. Consequently, the primary aim of present study was fo investigate the incidence of violence directed towards staft and patient abuse. Furthermore, we wanted to examine associations between the number of violent incidents and any of the variables gender, age, years in service, years at present workplace, education of the staff, type of setting, type of violence as well as the emotional reactions expressed by the staff.
