Abstract     According to our results, as well as others reported in the literature, a model for laryngeal carcinama transformation and progression is suggested. Loss of tumour suppressor function is implicated in the first steps of malignant transformation, although it does not confer additional advantages to invasive tumours. Activation of oncogenes seems to participate in later steps, maybe at the very border of malignancy development. Once the invasive phenotype is acquired, the collabaration between oncogene activation and proteolytic enzymes production (as well as many other elements) is needed for further tumour progression.
