Abstract     Eight hundred-twenty-one fine needle aspiration biopsy samples (FNAB) of salivary gland tumors were found from the files of the Department of Cytopathology, Institute of Oncology. Ljubljana hetween the years 1996-1999. Among 225 histologically verified lesions, 191 were benign and 34 malignant tumors. The specificity rate was 0,99; the overall sensitivity was 0,96; the accuracy was 0,95; negative predictive value was 0,95, and positive predictive value 0,95. The main reasons for false negative cytopathologic diagnosis are sampling mistake and false interpretation, especially in malignant non-Hodgkin lymphomas and low grade mucoepidermoid carcinomas. False positive are extremely rare (0,5 %). Our results confirm that FNAB is effective in the approach to the patients with salivary gland tumors and is reliable method for preoperative planning of the therapy.
