Abstract     Head and neck lesions occur commonly in infants and children. In most of them congenital or inflammatory origin can be proved. Malignant neoplasms of this region represent an uncommon entity in children, and so do the malignant epithelial tumors. Fifty-three patients under 18 years of age with primary head and neck solid malignant tumors were treated from 1971 to 1995 at the University Children's Hospital in Ljubljana. The primary carcinoma was found , in nasopharynx in 5, in sfenoidal sinus in 2 and in thyroid gland in 5 patients. A failure to recognise the warning signs and symptoms of a dangerous disease may delay diagnosis, increase morbidity and threaten the outcome of the disease. With lower radiation doses, adjusted to the effect of preradiation chemotherapy, complete tumor control can be achieved and acute and long-term morbidity reduced.
