Abstract     The occurrence of the carcinoma of the skin is increasing all over the world and also in Slovenia. Ultraviolet rays are considered to be the most important carcinogen, therefore solar keratosis is the most frequent precancerosis. Histologically, the carcinoma of the skin may be categorized into two groups, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. While clinical distinetion between the benign and malignant tumors could be problematic, so much more could be the differenciation between squamous and basal cell carcinoma. Histological confirmation is therefore obligatory. Our primary objective is to select treatment with least functional or aesthetic sequelae. Several treatment methods may be applied, among them the most frequent ones are surgery and radiotherapy. Both methods are equally successful, and total cure rate is in both cases 90 to 95%. In the available literature, there are no studies that would deal with the comparison of different treatment methods applied for similar tumor types. Generally, basalioma is treated only locally, whereas in squamous cell carcinoma treatment, the risk of metastatic spread should be taken into consideration. Currently, it is strongly recommended to take all possible preventive measures against excessive exposure to the sun. The decay of the ozone layer in the atmosphere, which is acting as a filter against ultraviolet rays will result in the increase in the incidence of the skin carcinoma in the decades to come. The principal preventive measure is avoidance of the sun, and protection of the skin with clothes and lotions.
