Abstract     Man is accompanied by alcohol for millennia. Slovenia is a country with "wet" culture with with a high availability of alcohol, and cultural customs encourage alcohol drinking. Cultural attitudes favour the negative consequencies of alcohol drinking, thus there is a lack of preventive measures. In such a culture alcohol consumption is high and alcohol related problems are more frequent even in childhood than in a culture where attitudes and customs restrict alcohol drinking. To prepare effective measures to reduce alcohol related problems, the epidemiology of drinking and the factors that influence drinking need to be identified. This study examines the drinking of alcohol amongst primary school children and junior high school students in Slovenia that has not been studied yet. It has been designed in order to achieve following main aims: - to analyze the drinking habits of primary school children and junior high school students in Slovenia, - to determine the factors that influence alcohol drinking amongst children, - to determine important influences between some such factors. The following hypotheses have been formulated after studying the relevani literature: - many children commence the drinking of alcohol before the age of ten, - children's drinking habits and attitudes toward alcohol change during their childhood, - there are differences between drinking habits of girls and boys and their attitudes toward alcohol, - children's drinking is influenced by several factors related to alcohol, the children's personality, their family and the socio-cultural enviroment where they live, - home alcohol production and alcohol accessibility influence children's drinking. In order to achieve the aims an anonymous questionnaire was designed. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
