Abstract     The author outlines the ethiopathogenesis, clinical picture and epidemiology of irritant and toxic contact dermatitis. He presents the results of a retrospective study of the cases of 100 patients with skin diseases on the hands who were patch tested in the year 1998 at the allergology laboratory, Department of Dermatovenerology Ljubljana because of suspected contact allergy. In 38 % of the patients the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis was confirmed while further 23% of patients had either irritant or toxic contact dermatitis. The most ant irritants and high-risk occupations are listed according to the author's results and to a in the literature. Finally, guidelines for the diagnosis of occupationally induced irritant d toxic contact dermatitis are proposed.
