Abstract     According to the pathogenesis, allergic contact dermatitis is defined as a chronic, reccurent dermatosis, whose manifestations appear following the contact of the skin of a sensibilised individual with the contact allergen. The author outlines the ethiopathogenesis of contact allergic dermatitis and its clinical picture. The epidemiology of contact allergy and of professional allergic contact dermatitis is presented according to the results of patch testing at the Department of Dermatovenerology in Ljubljana during the periods 1989 - 1993 and 1994 - 1998. During this 10-year period, 6129 patients were tested. 2787 of the patients had a positive reaction to one or more contact allergens. The most frequently positive allergens were nickel sulphate, potassium dichromate, formaldehyde, Fragrance-mix and cobalt chloride.
