Abstract     Existence of mechanisms, controlling body weight by regulating appetite and energy consumption, in mammals, is apparent from keeping relatively constant body weight in animals and humans over long periods. Isolation of hormone named leptin was a big breakthrough in our understanding of these mechanisms. However, the studies in recent years suggest that these mechanisms are inherently complicated and involve the interaction of many different genes/proteins. Many of these mechanism complement and even mimic each other function. For example, neuropeptide Y, a widespread neurotransmitter, has a very potent role in stimulating appetite but in contrast, mice lacking functional NPY gene do not show any abnormalities regarding their body weight and fat deposits. In present paper, some of the players in these processes will be discussed. The function of individual genes will be described as well as how these factors interact with each other in a grand show of body weight regulation.
Summary     Obstoj mehanizmov, ki pri sesalcih nadzirajo telesno težo z uravnavanjem apetita in porabo energije, je očiten zaradi dolgotrajnega ohranjanja relativno stalne telesne teže pri večini živali in ljudi. Osamitev hormona, imenovanega leptin, je pred nekaj leti pomenila velik napredek v razumevanju procesov uravnavanja hranjenja in nalaganja maščobnih zalog. Odkritja zadnjih let pa kažejo, da so ti mehanizmi, pri katerih sodelujejo številni geni oziroma njihovi produkti - beljakovine, izjemno zapleteni. Mnogi med njimi mehanizmov se med seboj očitno dopolnjujejo in lahko tudi nadomeščajo, saj ima npr. beljakovina NPY izredno velik spodbujevalni učinek na zauživanje hrane, če jo poskusnim živalim vbrizgamo v območje hipotalamusa. V nasprotju s tem pa miške brez gena za NPY ne kažejo nobenega znamenja zmanjšanega hranjenja in posledično nižje telesne teže. Kot že rečeno, sodelujejo pri procesih urejanja telesne teže številne beljakovine. V tem sestavku bomo skušali osvetliti pomen posameznih igralcev in kolikor nam današnje znanje dopušča, predstaviti, kako vsi ti igralci med seboj sodelujejo v veliki predstavi urejanja telesne teže.
