Abstract		Background. The article describes the importance of healthy teeth and stomatognathic system (occlusion) for its function and well-being of man. Missing teeth can be replaced, disturbed occlusal functions can be reestablished by the prosthetic means, all contribute to patient well-being. Prosthetic treatment could have harmful effects locally and on body as a whole. Conclusions. Described are some harmful effects of prosthetic treatment which could be iatrogenic due to style of treatment or allergic, irritative, toxic because of dental material's and host's nature. The role of prosthodontic treatment for the quality of life of elderly is emphasized, as part of the geriatric dentistry. Described is also the role of prosthetic treatment of patients with psychosomatic eating disorders and of patients with gastrointestinal diseases.
Summary		Izhodišča. Sestavek opisuje pomen urejenih zob in zdravega stomatognatega sistema (SGS) na njegovo delovanje in na dobro počutje človeka. S protetičnimi sredstvi lahko ponovno vzpostavljamo poručene funkcije SGS in izboljšamo njegov videz in s tem prispevamo k boljšemu počutju človeka. Sama protetična oskrba lahko škodljivo deluje lokalno ali sistemsko. Zaključki. Opisani so možni škodljivi učinki oskrbe, ki so bodisi iatrogeni zaradi načina posega ali alergični, iritacijski, toksični zaradi narave tuje snovi, vnesene v telo. Poudarjen je pomen protetične oskrbe za kakovost življenja starostnikov, s čimer se ukvarja geriatrična stomatologija. Opisan je tudi pomen protetične oskrbe pri psihosomatskih motnjah prehranjevanja in pri brezzobih ljudeh z gastrointestinalnimi boleznimi.
