Abstract     The Danube, Europe's second longest river, from beginning to end travels 2780 km. It harbors more than 3400 species, many of them endemites, and a varied and rich flora. In 1990 the Rumanian section of the delta was proclaimed a biosphere reserve and is now on the list of wetlands protected by the Ramsar Convention. More than half of this region is also recognized as a World Natural Heritage.
