Abstract     Hydroxyapatite coatings of metal implants that are used in traumatology and orthopaedics are at some types of these implants also in direct contact with the soft tissues. The aim of this study is to find out what is the late soft tissue reaction on hydroxyapatite coating of metal implants which have some specific properties and are implanted between the skeletal muscles of the femoral region in sheep. We expect that the late inflammatory reaction around coated implants will be less intensive than around uncoated implants. Hydroxyapatite is a biocompatible material, stainless steel on the other hand is not very biocompatible because it is prone to corrosion. Four hydroxyapatite coated Schanz screws were implanted into one femur and four uncoated Schanz screws into the other femur of each sheep so that the screws remained also between the skeletal muscles and subcutaneous tissue. The animals were sacrificed 2 and 6 months after the implantation. The segments of soft tissue near the screws were obtained immediately after the sacrifice. Macroscopic descriptions of the specimens were done. Histomorphological analysis was performed by light and electron microscopy, quantitative analysis of the specimens was done. Analysis of the specimens indicates the presence of three distinct layers near the implants. Next to the implant there is the pseudosynovial membrane which is followed by the granulomatous layer. Further away from the implant there is the connective tissue. This is histological picture of chronical granulomatous inflammatory reaction. Differences in mean values of the width of layers and average percentages of component cells in the granulomatous layers of test and control group are not statistically significant. Only the difference in mean values of cellularity of the granulomatous layers is significant.
