Abstract     The aim of the pharmaceutical technology is designing of safe and effective medicines of good quality. To determine the manner of interaction of phatmaceutical powders (drugs and excipients) with liquids and vapours (particularly water), which is of extreme importance in many fields of pharmaceutical science, it is necessary to understand the nature of the powder's surface. Interaction can assume very different forms and depends on the physical and chemical properties of all components included in the process. The properties of solid and liquid surfaces determine the course of different processes: dissolution, emulsion, suspension, granulation, mixing, coating, adsorption, etc. Despite the great importance and applicability of understanding how different surface characteristics affect the process, only few analyses for solid surface determination are used on a regular basis. The most useful concept for describing the surface properties is surface free energy. This article provides an overview of the methods for observing the surface free energy and a compendium of the processes, carried out to study surface phenomena. Different fields of research emphasized the value of the surface free energy for solid materials.
Summary     Cilj farmacevtske tehnologije je oblikovanje varnih, učinkovitih in kakovostnih zdravil. Pri izdelavi farmacevtskih oblik vstopajo praškaste trdne snovi (učinkovine, pomožne snovi) s svojimi površinami v stik z različnimi snovmi v razli*nih fazah, na primer z različnimi tekočinami (predvsem vodo), parami in trdnimi snovmi. Interakcije med njimi so zelo različne ter odvisne od fizikalno-kemijskih lastnosti posameznih komponent. Od lastnosti trdnih in tekočih površin je odvisen potek različnih procesov: raztapljanja, emulgiranja, suspendiranja, granuliranja, mešanja, oblaganja, adsorpcije vlage im. Kljub pomembnosti in veliki praktični uporabnosti poznavanja lastnosti površine se le malo analiz, s katerimi lahko ocenimo lastnosti površine trdne snovi, izvaja rutinsko. Največ nam o lastnostih površine trdne snovi pove prosta površinska energija. Članek podaja pregled metod za vrednotenje proste pvršinske energije ter pregled procesov in področij, pri katerih so raziskovaii pojave na mejnih povr*inah in ugotavljali ter potrjevali uporabnost parametra proste površinske energije trdne snovi.
