Abstract     The problematics in the study is dealing with is an analysis of diagnostic procedures for early detection of asbestosis together with the methods for objective evaluation of working ability of patients involved. The study was performed in the sample of 105 patients in whom the diagnosis had been confirmed at the Institute Golnik mostly during the years 1980-1988. After confirmation of diagnosis of lung/or pleural asbestosis their state of health had been followed for 4,9 yrs (+_3,36). The diagnostic value of case history, clinical examination, chest roentgenogram, lung function tests, basic biochemical blood and urine test as well as immunological examinations, cytologic findings of BAL and histological bronchoscopy had been analysed. The results of the study revealed that basic diagnostic procedures for the diagnosis of asbestosis are case history, clinical examination, chest roentgenogram and spirometry. These diagnostic procedures enable the establishment of diagnosis, evaluation of functional pulmonary impairment and follow-up after the diagnosis had been established in professionaly exposed patients. Only in the absence of typical roentgenological involvement of the lung in professionaly exposed patients with evident clinical symptoms of disease, the diagnostic procedures should be expanded to the histological examination of lung tissue. The transbronchial biopsy of the lung during fiberbronchoscopy has the priority in order to avoid the complications after the intervention. The analysis confirmed the chronic, slowly progressing nature of asbestosis in which pathogenes is - according to our investigations - the alveolar macrophage, provoked by asbestos, has the central role.(trunc.)
