Abstract     In a series of children with primary herpetic gingivo-stomatitis oral acyclovir (ACV) was compared with the symptomatic therapy. Twenty-four children were treated with ACV suspencion 21 received the symptomatic treatment. The ACV dose in children aged 1 - 2 years was 100mg 5 times daily; older children, up to 15 years of age, received 200mg 5 times daily. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of ACV on the duration of fever, time of lesion healing, new lesion formation, virus shedding, formation of specific IgG and IgM antibodies to HSV by the enzymatic method for the demonstration of herpetic infection.
