Abstract     The microbiological characteristics of P.a. strains, isolated from CF patients material, were investigated in this study. The material has been collected from september 1987 until april 1990. P.a. was isolated from the material of 8 from altogether 31 patients. The effect of extracellular enzymes was tested on special ager plates and by API ZYM method. The effect of the following enzymes was confirmed: alcaline phosphatase, esterase, esterase lipase, lipase, acid phosphates, elastase, caseinase, deoxyribonuclease, hyaluronidase, chondroitinase, lecithinase and hemolysin. The P.a. strains were typed with phages by Lindberg method and hybridised with the specific DNA probe (Pst I-Nru I exoA) by Southern method. The epidemiological relationship of the P.a. strains was investigated and the accuracy and the practical applicability of the methods were compared. The ELISA for detection of serum IgG for exotoxin A and alcaline protease of P.a. was introduced into the laboratory routine. The serum level of specific IgG against exotoxin A from 31 slovene patients, 10 germain patients and 30 healthy children were determined. The serum IgG levels were the same in CF patients without P.a. lung colonisation as in the control group of healthy individuals. The serum IgG levels from chronically infected patients were elevated. The amount of specific serum IgG did not differ much in chronically infected patients after a longer period, but sudden rise in acute infection was noted. Relatively low levels of serum IgG against A were observed in two patients whose illness terminated fatally. In two other patients the elevated levels of serum IgG against exotoxin A were detected although P.a. isolation from sputum was unsuccessful. We presume that the beginning of P.a. colonisation of their respiratory tract took place. The avidity of serum exotoxin A by the method of Gripenbergs and the competitive ELISA was determined in our patients.(trunc.)
