Abstract     An unsettled question why the shapes of paranasal sinuses at individuals of the same age, sex and constitution are so different, still remains. Many scientific articles revealed definite relation between the middle ear mucosal inflammation and pneumatisation of the temporal bone. There is scarce data about such relation (mucosal inflammation bone pneumatisation) for maxilla. It seems selfevident that degree of pneumatisation of the temporal bone and maxillar bone is similar, due to identical causes. These conclusions lead us to the following goals: - relate maxillar mucosal inflammation to the depree of pneumatisation in the developmental age; - determine the relation between paranasal sinus measurements to skull shapes; - asses the possible causality between the extent of inflammation to the shape of middle part of the face. We examined 45 cadavers (19 males and 26 fermales), and measured the volumes of the maxillary sinuses. The quality of maxillary sinus mucosa was optically assessed and the concomitant tissue samples were taken for histologic examination. Basic type of head shapes was determined according to Williams scheme. Second group consisted of 27 adults. They all had experiend maxillary sinus mucosal inflammation during their developmental age. The precise anamnesis was taken, head shape, shape of bite and nasal patency were also determined. The status of paranasal sinuses was documented by x-ray photographs. X-ray photographs made in the developmental period of maxillary sinuses, and the control ones produced after the development was completed, were carefuly examined. This examination included ultrasonic measurement of surface, width and height of maxillary sinuses. (x-ray documentation can be found with the separate illnes descriptions). 60 adults who never had maxillary sinus inflammation were chosen as a control group. Precise measurements of the maxillary sinuses from x-ray photographs were also performed in this group.(trunc.)
