Abstract     New drugs with various mechanisms of action were introduced following discoveries on the nature of Parkinson's disease. The author first summarizes the basic biochemical processes within the dopaminergic system, the alterations of these processes in Parkinson's disease and the ways they can be modified pharmacologically. The advantages and drawbacks of antiparkinsonian drugs with different modes of action are discussed. The complications of long-term treatment are described in greater detail. In addition to fractional dosing of individual drugs, an early combining of drugs has recently been gaining popularity
