Abstract		This review presents lovastatin and similar "statins", inhibitors of HMG-CoA reductase, the key enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. These drugs are very effective and well tolerated in the management of hypercholesterolaemic disorders. However, their price is high, and their impact on cardiovascular prognostis must be firmly established before these agents can be recommended for the first-line treatment of elevated cholesterol levels
