Abstract     Calcium antagonists are used primarily as antihypertonic and antianginous drugs, verapamil being used also in supraventricular tachycardia. The most thoroughly investigated are first generation calcium antagonists (nifedipine, verapamil and diltiazem). Second generation calcium antagonists are nifedipine derivatives with improved pharmacokinetics, so that they can be administered once or twice daily. Calcium antagonists are antihypertensive drugs of average efficacy which do not cause metabolic disturbances of carbohydrates and fats. They make possible regression of the hypertrophic myocardium. The most important undesirable side-effects of calcium antagonists are peripheral vasodilation and edema around the ankles. Calcium antagonists are particularly suitable for treating hypertension in older age, in diabetics, chronic lung patients and obese patients
