Abstract     Tendon sheath inflammation or stenosing tendovaginitis involving finger flexors, described in literature as 'trigger finger', is a common condition that general practitioner encounter every day Despite the recognizable clinical presentation and known pathogenesis of this condition, such patients are rarely referred to the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery with a correct diagnosis. The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyze the diagnosis, age, sex and affected finger of patients who underwent surgical intervention. Forty-two percent of patients who came into our department had correct diagnosis, 7 percent of patients had a partially correct diagnosis and 52 percent came in with an incorrect diagnosis. Twenty-seven percent of these patients were undiagnosed. The most common incorrect diagnosis was 'contracture', followed by 'mallet finger' and 'posttraumatic condition'. The ratio between male and female patients was 1: 3.35 with an average age of 52.7 years. The most often affected imger was the thumb (55.5 percent of cases), followed by the ring finger (19.2 percent), middle finger (14.8 percent), little finger (7.4 percent); and index finger 3.0 percent. The anatomy of the digital flexor tendons and the pathogenesis, etiology and clinical picture of stenosing tendovaginitis are described. Furthermore, possibilities for conservative and surgical treatment by general physicians and surgeons in outpatient departments are discussed.
Summary     Vnetje kitnih ovojnic oz. stenozantni tendovaginitis upogibalk prstov zaradi značilne klinične slike imenujemo tudi "sprožilni prst" ali "trigger finger".
