Abstract     According to the Law on Communicable Diseases, the notification of communicable diseases is compulsory. Data on communicable diseases are systematically collected and analysed by the Regional Institutes of Public Health, then sent to the Communicable Diseases Centre at the Institute of Public Health of the Republic of Slovenia. There, monthly reports and an annual report on their incidence and epidemiological characteristics are prepared. The successful prevention and control of communicable diseases are based on an efficient national system of epidemiologic surveillance. Such a system makes it possible to obtain data on important communicable diseases, to become aware of epidemics and to monitor the efficiency of programmes for controlling diseases. The system includes only information necessary for the prevention and control of these diseases, therefore data can differ from one disease to another. The National system of epidemiologic surveillance includes: prompt notification, confirmation, decision-making and determination of suitable measures, and variable reporting speeds in order to meet the needs of a systematic surveillance of communicable diseases. This system also enables early detection of cases with the aim of controlling the spread of communicable diseases. This system of epidemiologic surveillance is an important basis for operative programmes of control. This is especially true for vaccine preventable diseases and for diseases which occur in epidemics. Besides being under systematic surveillance, some diseases are also followed up on with sensitive laboratory supported investigative systems, in order to obtain the information necessary for decision-making in the domain of public health assurance. The reported communicable diseases are presented in tables according to certain epidemiological characteristics. Acute respiratory and diarrheal diseases represent the highest proportion of reported diseases. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
