Abstract     The prevalence of antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies (ANCA) was evaluated in 115 serum samples from patients with various chronic liver diseases. The presence of ANCA was detected on ethanol-fixed cytospin preparations of peripheral blood neutrophils by indirect immunofluorescence. A perinuclear (pANCA) staining pattern was considered positive. The ANCA autoantibodies were detected in 17% (7/42) of patients with autoimmune hepatitis, in 6% (1/17) of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis and in 7% (2/30) of patients with secondary biliary cirrhosis. ANCA was not found in patients with chronic hepatitis (O/26). Among patients with autoimmune hepatitis, ANCA were selectively observed in 509'0 (6/12) of patients with type 1 autoimmune hepatitis. These resultsindicate that ANCA may be usefulin the differential diagnosis of different types of autoimmune hepatitis.
