Abstract     Microbiological and physico chemical quality of swimming pool water in the Celje region The legislation goverming the sphere of swimming waters has set the minimum requirements, standards and directives to be considered by the planners, managers and users of swimming pools when planning, managing and using such facilities. Through the technological procedures applied for preparation and conditioning of water both the hygienic and sanitary conformity of swimming pool water are assured. In the Celje region the Institute of public health Celje has been performing the systematic sanitary hygienic monitoring and sampling of swimming pool water for microbiological as well as physico chemical laboratory analyses which cover 20 swimming pool facilities. In 1999 there were 1964 samples of swimming pool water taken in the Celje region for microbiological analysis, from which 16% were found inadequate and 1470 samples taken for physico chemical analysis, from which 39% were found inadequate, the majority (60%) due to inappropriate free chlorine concentration. The improvement of sanitary and hygienic quality level of swimming pool water can be achieved by replacing the out-of-date and wom out swimming pool equipment for water preparation and conditioning as well as by educating both the swimming pool users as well as the swimming pool staff of the necessary sanitary measures.
