Abstract     An organisms cells from a system of interacting communications enabling responses to external stimuli as well as to endogenous needs and cell actions. Cells communicate with the help of messenger molecules. Some are small and lipid which can freely cross the cell membrane but large and hydrophobic ones are insoluble in the two-layered membrane, and send their message through receptors buried in the membrane. The activated receptors then direct them to specific cellular effecters that start the cells response. Three basic families of membrane receptors are known: those that function as ion channels, those that function as enzymes, and the G-protein-coupled receptors-GPCR. We describe the characteristics of GPCR, some methods of studying them, and their importance in biomedicine.
