Abstract | Isoelastic prostheses are a special type of total hip replacement consisting of two polymer materials: polyacetal stam and polyethylene acetabulum cup. Due to relatively poor clinical results their implantation has been restricted during the last decade. In order to reveal the reasons for their unsuccessful clinical performance, we examined the prosthetic components and periprosthetic tissue of failed prostheses. A method of tissue digestion using sodium hydroxide followed by centrifugation of the digested tissues was used to separate polyacetal and polyethylene particles. Polyacetal particles were verified by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and polyethylene particles were identified by fourier-transform IR (FTIR) spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed that the majority of particles were micrometer in size and their morphology was fibril-like or shred-like. | |
Summary | Izoelastične kolčne proteze so posebna vrsta protez, ki so sestavljene iz dveh polimernih materialov: poliacetalnega debla in polietilenske čašice. Zardi relativno slabih kliničnih rezultatov se v zadnjem desetletju tovrstne proteze ne uporabljajo več. Da bi ugotovili razlog za njihovo neuspešnost, smo preiskovali odstranjene komponente protez ter tkivo okrog le-teh. Za izolacijo delcev smo uporabili metodo bazičnega razkroja tkiva in s centrifugiranjem ločili polietilenske in poliacetalne delce. S spektroskopijo energijske porazdelitve rentgenskih žarkov (EDS) smo identificirali delce poliacetala in z infrardečo spektroskopijo s Fourirjevo transformacijo (FTIR) delce polietilena. Morfologijo delcev smo določili z vrstično elektronsko spektroskopijo (SEM). | |
