Abstract     Diabetic neuropathy is an important chronical complication of diabetes. It's presence and seriousness ussualy correlates with duration of diabetes, but in some patients it can be present at the diagnosis of diabetes. Neuropathy can present in many ways, but most common as a simetric polyneuropathy, less often as focal or multifocal neuropathy. The evaluations for diabetic neuropathy should include assessement of neuropathic symptoms and neuropathic deficites, nerve conduction, quantitative and qualitative sensory examination and quantitative autonomic examination. At lnstitute for Rehabilitation, Republic of Slovenia we assess impairment of peripheral nerve system by determing thermal specific and thermal pain sensitivity. We use the Marstock method (Fruhstofer at al. 1976), which enables quantitative and qualitative assessement of the cool and warm thresholds and the cold pain and heat pain thresholds. These thresholds are assessed on different body sites, usually on thenar, foot, leg and thigh. The test is subjective and good cooperation of the patient is required.
