Abstract		General practitioners encounter patients with dementia and their relatives in every stage of the disease. Short presentation of basic information on dementia and on changes of cognitive, emotional and physical abilities and behavioral changes in patients with dementia is followed by a description of three stages of the disease. There follows a description of what is happening to patients and their families, and what should be the role of physicians and other health professionals and social worhers. There are also some diagnostic procedure guidelines and a description ofvarious diagnostic methods that are available to general practitioners.
