Abstract     Constitutional principal of equality ensures equal rights and liberties for all, regardless of personal circumstances. Also a patient with dementia has a right to his/her personal dignity and respect of his/her physical and mental integrity. With involuntary detention and treatment in psy- chiatric hosčZitals and often also in other social, nursing or sheltering institutions the rights to personal freedom and to voluntary treatment are being derogated. In the treatment process the preference should be given to patients' co-operation over involuntary measures. Beside medi- cation a range of rehabilitation and therapeutic activities, as wide and as diverse as possible, is also essential. Special concern should be dedicated to the implementation of prohibition on torture and malevolent, in human and degrading treatment. The provided living conditions should allow for human dignity, including the possibilities of physical and psychical relaxation. A "positive therapeutic environment" should be established with enough room to ensure patients' privacy. Controlling of violent and agitated patients should proceed, whenever possible, without the use of force and coercive measures. A patient has a right to be informed about the rules of common living in the institution, a right to efficient possibilities of lodging complaints and a right to maintaining contacts with the outer world.
