Abstract		Foundations of school health services in Slovenia go back to the beginning of the 20th century. Regular monitoring of growth, development and health of schoolchildren and adolescents provides basis for appropriate and timely professional actions aimed at health protection of the population. Influences of environment and school in the sensitive period of biological and social growing-up require good knowledge of the situation, cooperation with school as well as support of authorities and of health policy. Epidemiological data recorded by school doctors show that the schoolyouth pathology was changing according to the circumstances, social processes and manner and duration of schooling. Because of the complexity and high demands of work in the field, professional education of school doctors was essential and was organised in different ways, extending from educational courses to the specialisation in school medicine. The school health service developed accordingly. Familiarity with health status of a population is only possible with a unified recording and analysing of medical sta tistics and with comparison of epidemiological data.
Summary		Temelji šolske zdravstvene službe na Slovenskem segajo v začetek 20. stoletja. Redno sprem janje rasti, razvoja in zdravja šolskih otrok in mladine je temelj ustreznega in pravočasnega strokovnega ukrepanja za zagotovitev zdravstvene zaščite prebivalstva. Vpliv okolja in šole na občut jivo obdobje biološkega in socialnega zorenja zahteva dobro poznavanja razmer, sodelovanje s šolo ter podporo oblasti in zdravstvene politike. Iz epidemioloških podatkov šolskih zdravnikov ugotavljamo, da se je patologija šolske mladine spreminjala glede na razmere, družbena dogajanja ter način in dolžino šolanja. Zaradi zapletenosti in zahtevnosti dela je bilo nujno strokovno usposab janje šolskih zdravnikov, ki je segalo od tečajev do specializacije iz šolske medicine. Skladno s tem se je razvijala tudi šolska zdravstvena služba. Vpogled v zdravstveno stanje določene populacije je mogoč le z enotnim beleženjem in vodenjem zdravstvene statistike ter primerjanjem epidemioloških podatkov.
