Abstract		Modern understanding of mental health is not limited to the absence of mental disorder only. Mental health in the developmental stages of childhood is of major importance for wholesome adolescent development and is a part of person's complex health status. In his/her work with an adolescent a school doctor must consider all the patient's psychosocial characteristics and apply them into the doctor-patient relation as well as into professional decisions about the treatment. Mental health is especially endangered in adolescents with severe and chronic health disorders. Important are also the psychological dimensions of health risks and disturbances, typical during adolescence (eating disorders, accident proneness, self destructive behaviour, somatogenic disorders, early sex activities, use of psychoactive drugs etc.). Cooperation with professionals is needed when treating an adolescent with severe psychiatric symptoms.
Summary		Sodobno pojmovanje duševnega zdravja ni omejeno le na odsotnost duševne motnje. Duševno zdravje v razvojnem obdobju je odločilno za celoten mladostnikov razvoj in je sestavni del njegovega celostnega zdravstvenega stanja. Šolski zdravnik mora pri delu z mladostnikom upoštevati vse osnovne značilnosti psihosocialnega dogajanja pri svojem bolniku in to vključiti v svoj odnos do njega ter v strokovne odločitve v procesu zdravljenja. Duševno stanje resno in kronično bolnih mladostnikov je še posebno ogroženo, pomembne pa so tudi psihološke razsežnosti zdravstvenih motenj in tveganj, ki so za adolescentno obdobje značilna (motnje hranjenja, nezgodništvo, samopoškodovalno vedenje, somatizacija, zgodnje spolno vedenje, uživanje psihoaktivnih snovi). Pri obravnavi mladostnikov z resnejšo psihiatrično simptomatiko ima šolski zdravnik različne možnosti sodelovanja s strokovnjaki s tega področja.
