Abstract     Coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in Slovenia. They are associated with high degree of disability and substantial loss of productivity and represent a great public health and economic problem to our society. All atherosclerotic vascular diseases together cause 40% of deaths and 11% of all hospitalisations. The most prevalent and the most malignant is coronary heart disease. It is the main cause of death in Slovenia. However, the mortality due to coronary heart disease is decreasing during the last years and is the same as the average mortality in European community. Cerebrovascular diseases are the third most, common cause of death after cancer in Slovenia and the mortality due to these diseases is still much higher than the average mortality in European community. The high prevalence and serious consequences of atherosclerotic vascular disease demand that more effective prevention become the priority of our health system.
