Abstract     Because of the systemic nature of atherosclerosis it is very probable that in case of one manifestation of the disease there are also pathologic changes in other segmerits of cardiovascular system. Some recent studies have shown close relationship between cerebrovascular and coronary heart disease. The severity of peripheral circulatory disturbances, which is estimated by decrease of ankle-brachial pressure index, is a very objective prognostic indicator of cerebrovascular disease and total cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. There is also evidence of close relationship between atherosclerotic lesions on carotid arteries and coronary atherosclerosis. Early, preclinical lesions of carotid arteries, like increased intima-media thickness, are very reliable predictors of coronary events. They have higher prognostic value than all other known classical risk factors of atherosclerosis. Carotid arteriesrepresent easily accessible segment of circulatory system for ultrasonographic diagnostic procedures and serve as an indicator for generalized atherosclerosis. Detection of atherosclerotic lesions on peripheral arteries can serve as surrogate for estimation of atherosclerotic changes in segments of circulatory system that are not so easy accessible for direct noninvasive investigation.
