Abstract     While transcranial Doppler ultrasonography has already been well established in the world, in Slovenia it represents a relatively new ultrasonographic technique for the investigation of cerebral blood vessels. It is believed to be a safe, non-invasive, well-tested, repeatable and reliable technique suitable for continuous measuring of blood flow in real time, as well as for color imaging of the intracranial vessels. The equipment required for the procedure is not too expensive and can be moved from one place to another as needed, its main advantage being the repeatability of investigation without causing any damage to the patient. Transcranial Doppler ultrasonography enables us to observe the course of great arteries on the cranial base, detect any regional change in the speed of blood flow, predict cerebral autoregulation, register blood-flow response to changes in the partial CO2 pressure. Together with other stimulation methods under physiological conditions, it can be used for testing the cerebrovascular reserve before surgery on the carotid arteries, or for the detection of emboli in cardiovascular diseases, which is associated with early diagnosis of vascular dementia.
