Abstract     The enormous burden of cerebrovascular disorders can be diminished by preventive measures as was reported in a large epidemiological study named MONICA. The main modifiable risk factors remain: arterial hypertension, smoking, alcohol, diabetes; hypercholesterolemia, heart diseases. Therefore the primary prevention consists of lifestyle interventions and medical interventions to decline these risk factors. Secondary prevention also consists of lifestyle and medical interventions, but also of antiagregation treatment. Preventing vascular events is especially important because of its worse prognosis.
