Abstract     Psychotropic drugs (antidepressants, antipsychotics, benzodiazepine anxiolytics and anticholinergics) can influence cognitive functions considerably. In healthy volunteers this effect is predominantly negative; in patients, it is often positive due to therapeutic effects of treatment. Newer antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and selective reversible monoaminooxidase inhibitors) show less interference with cognitive functions when compared to old ones. Benzodiazepines can compromise learning ability and cause anterograde amnesia; during long-term treatment tolerance to harmful effects on attention develops. Low and moderate doses of atypical antipsychotics do not produce significant negative effects on cognition. Anticholinergics adversely influence memory functions, but mostly in elderly. When choosing the right drug for a patient with cognitive deficit, possible adverse effects on cognition are important factors in decision making.
