Abstract | Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) is a new university formed from Manchester Polytechnic in 1992. However, its Department of Biological Sciences has been running degree programmes for nearly thirty years. Molecular and cellular life sciences are taught to students on full- and part-time degree and HNC programmes in biological and biomedical sciences. The demands of the timetable for a diverse menu of biological subjects, increases in student numbers and reduced resources restricted the time available for teaching molecular and cellular biology. Staff teaching molecular and cellular biology have made difficult choices over which areas to emphasise, how they should be delivered and the students assessed (Gaffney & al. 1995, Smith & al. 1995). These topics have also been discussed in the UK biochemistry community (Wrigglesworth 1996, Smith 1999). Some of the approaches adopted by MMU are described. | |
Summary | Manchester Metropolitan University je nova univerza, ki je leta 1992 nastala iz tamkajšnje politehnike. Kljub razmeroma novi univerzi, izvaja Oddelek za biološke znanosti biološke dodiplomske programe le trideset let. Študentje poslušajo molekularno in celično biologijo kot del njihovega rednega ali izrednega dodiplomskega usposabljanja. Zahteve urnika za različen izbor bioloških predmetov, povečevanje števila študentov in zmanjšanje sredstev omejujejo čas, ki je namenjen poučevanju molekularne in celične biologije. Akademsko osebje, ki poučuje omenjene predmete, je postavljeno pred težak iziv koliko in kaj predavati in čemu je potrebno posvetiti več pozornosti. Predavatelji se morajo tudi odločiti na kakšen način je najbolje posredovati znanje in kako ga pveverjati. O teh problemih se je veliko razpravljalo med britanskimi biokemiki. V članku so podani nekateri pristopi, ki so v veljavi na MMU. | |
