Abstract     This paper presents targets of UV-B radiation and plant response to enhanced doses. Adaptation to enhanced UV-B radiation is based on the UV-B absorption properties of various plant tissue and the efficiency of repair mechanisms. The main targets are nucleic acids, proteins, and membranes. Damage can be caused directly and indirectly. In plants, UV-B radiation induces regulatory mechanisms that result in photomorphogenetic adaptations or leads to the damage of cell structures and to the inhibition of life processes. UV-B influences gene expression, the content of various substances and pigments, processes in cells, and consequently growth and development. The production of various UV-B protective substances and DNA repair mechanisms play a very important role in plant resistance. Plant response depends on the species and its environment. Environmental adaptations and repair mechanisms determine the success of individual species in the ecosystem.
Summary     V prispevku so predstavljene tarče delovanja in odziv rastlin na povečano UV-B sevanje. Prilagojenost na povečane intenzitete UV-B sevanja temelji na UV-absorpcijskih lastnostih rastlinskih komponent in učinkovitosti popravljalnih mehanizmov. Glavne tarče delovanja so nukleinske kisline, proteini in membrane. Škodljivo delovanje je neposredno ali pa posredno. UV-B sevanje pri rastlinah sproži regulatorne procese, na osnovi katerih se razvijejo fotomorfogenetske prilagoditve ali pa pripelje do poškodb celičnih struktur in inhibicije življenjskih procesov. Pod vplivom UV-B sevanja se lahko spremeni izraznost genov, vsebnost različnih zaščitnih snovi in pigmentov, celični procesi, kar vpliva na spremenjeno rast in razvoj rastline. Pomembno vlogo pri odpornosti rastlin ima tvorba različnih UV-B zaščitnih snovi in DNK popravljalnih mehanizmov. Odziv rastlin je odvisen od rastlinske vrste in njenega neposrednega okolja. Prilagoditve skupaj s popravljalnimi mehanizmi določajo uspešnost posamezne vrste v ekosistemu.
