Abstract     Flow of blood through the cardiovascular system is characterised by five oscillatory processes. In healthy relaxed subjects their characteristic frequencies range from 0.01-1.2 Hz. Each oscillator is coupled with each of the others thus mutually influencing all their frequencies and amplitudes. Control of the cardiovascular system appears to be maintained by a fine balance between the eigenfrequencies of the oscillators, resulting in an interplay between instantaneous amplitude and frequency modulation and synchronization between their phases.
