Abstract     Osseointegrated implants are a well established treatment option for edentulous patients. Progressive thread design implants (Ankylos, Degussa-Hulls AG, Hanau, Germany) have been used in clinical practice since 1987. Several recent reports have documented good performance of the Ankylos implant system even in controversial situations (single molar replacement, tooth-to-implant fixed prostheses). Different types of osseointegrated implants have been used at our departrnent for almost 10 years. Between November 1998 and February 2001, 107 progressive thread design implants were placed in 48 patients. Fifty-eight implants (54.2 %) were inserted without prior alveolar bone condensation, expansion or augmentation. The other 49 implants (45.8 %) were placed after pre- or intraimplantation osteoplastic procedures. Forty-two per cent of the implants were placed in completely edentulous jaws. In 51.4 % of the cases, the bone quality, as assessed by the surgeon during drilling, corresponded to type 2 following the classification of Lekholm and Zarb. The cumulative success rate of our implant series was 99.1 %; one implant was lost at secondstage surgery. The success rate after loading was 100 %; 63 loaded implants showed minimal or no bone resorption. Our initial experience with the Ankylos implant system confirms that this is a predictable treatment option, which may be expected to give very good long-term results.
