Abstract     From September 1998 to May 1999, a total of 264 apicoectomies were carried out at the Department of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery in Ljubljana. Seventy-one treated teeth were evaluated by clinical and radiological examination after an average postoperative interval of 11.2 months. The radiographs were analysed using the method of Rud et al. The results showed successful healing in 79 % of cases, uncertain healing in 12.5 % and failure of treatment in 8.5 %. The apicoectomied teeth were divided into four groups based on the method of root filling employed. In the group where gutta-percha points had been used, complete healing was established in all cases. Retrograde filling of the root canal resulted in a healing rate of 89.5%. The use of metal points was associated with a healing rate of 69 %. The group where neither a retroseal procedure nor orthograde filling was performed on the day of endodontic surgery showed a success rate of 66.5 %.
