Abstract     Due to excessive and improper use of antibiotics, more and more resistant bacteria are emerging and are the source of many hospital infections, which are becoming difficult to treat efficiently. New antibiotics are constantly being discovered, which, however, quickly become inefficient; hence, more funds are being spent on the treatment of infections with antimicrobial substances. A laboratory can contribute to rationalization of antibiotic usage by encouraging collection of specimens and through its influence on correct collection and transport of specimens, which is of essential importance for the detection of causative microorganisms. Immediate notification of the results obtained by a quick and standardized method for identification and antibiotic susceptibility determination enabie the fastest switch from empirical to targeted treatment. Primary care doctors rarely send specimens for microbiological analysis, which reduces the amount of information on antibiotic resistance in the general population. Pooled data on bacterial resistance collected by a microbiology laboratory are of major importance in preparing recommendations and measures on a locai, state and international level.
